About This Journey
Kenya's coastline is one of East Africa's best-kept secrets — a 600-kilometre sweep of white sand, warm Indian Ocean, and Swahili culture that has been shaped by Arab traders, Portuguese explorers, and the rhythms of a dhow sailing civilisation that has existed for a thousand years. This journey moves through three of its most distinct expressions: the powder-soft beaches of Diani, the marine life of Watamu, and the ancient, car-free island of Lamu — each a world unto itself. You will stay in boutique properties chosen for their character and seclusion — a clifftop villa above Diani's reef, a marine research lodge at Watamu with access to the national park's most protected dive sites, and a Swahili-style townhouse in Lamu's old quarter where the streets are too narrow for anything but donkeys and time.
Day by Day Itinerary
Mombasa arrival — the old city at the edge of the ocean
A private transfer from Moi International Airport takes you through Mombasa's Old Town — the Fort Jesus ramparts rising above the harbour, the carved wooden doors, the scent of spices. A private walking tour through the old quarter with a local historian before a rooftop dinner above the port, Swahili seafood, and the dhow lights crossing the channel below.
Diani Beach — the powder sand of the south coast
A scenic private transfer south to Diani — widely considered one of the finest beaches on the continent. Check in to your clifftop boutique villa above the reef. The afternoon is yours: a lounger above the Indian Ocean, the sound of the waves through the palm canopy, a private beach butler to ensure your glass stays full. Dinner at a restaurant carved into the coral cliff at the water's edge.
Shimba Hills and Colobus monkeys — the forest behind the beach
A morning drive into Shimba Hills National Reserve — the only coastal elephant sanctuary in Kenya, home to the rare roan antelope and Sable. Your guide walks you through the forest canopy. An afternoon stop at the Colobus Conservation Centre, where the endangered Angolan colobus is protected, before returning to Diani for a sundowner on your villa terrace with the ocean going amber.
Diani reef — diving the Indian Ocean
An early morning private boat takes you out to Diani's fringing reef. With a PADI-certified dive guide, you descend to a world of coral gardens, hawksbill turtles, and reef sharks that move with total indifference. Non-divers join a private snorkelling guide along the shallower reef flat. Lunch on the boat, anchored in a turquoise channel. A late afternoon in Diani's local market — fresh produce, kanga fabrics, handmade jewellery.
Transfer north — Watamu and the marine park
Private transfer north along the coast road through Malindi to Watamu — a small, unhurried beach town wrapped around one of Kenya's premier marine national parks. Check in to your marine lodge, a low-built property directly on the beach with a private stretch of sand. Afternoon snorkelling in the Marine Park's protected channels with your guide.
Whale sharks and the open ocean
Watamu is one of the few places on earth where whale shark sightings are reliable between October and March. Your private research boat and expert marine biologist guide take you beyond the reef to find them — these 10-metre giants moving through warm blue water with a slow, unforgettable grace. An afternoon visit to the Watamu Turtle Watch project, where Olive Ridley turtles are rehabilitated and returned to the sea.
Gede Ruins and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest
The Gede Ruins — a 12th-century Swahili city reclaimed by the forest, its coral-stone mosques and merchant houses emerging from the trees in a light that feels both ancient and immediate. Your archaeologist guide brings the city alive. An afternoon walk in Arabuko-Sokoke, Kenya's largest coastal forest and a globally critical bird habitat — 230 species, six of them endemic, found nowhere else on earth.
Fly to Lamu — stepping back a thousand years
A private charter flight from Malindi lifts you above the coast and sets you down on the Lamu Archipelago. A traditional dhow ferries you across the channel to Lamu Island — there are no cars here, only donkeys and narrow alleys that smell of jasmine and wood smoke. Check in to your Swahili townhouse: antique carved furniture, a rooftop terrace above the old town, a resident cook who will prepare anything you ask. Sunset from the rooftop with a cold Tusker.
Lamu — the island at its own pace
A full day to inhabit Lamu rather than visit it. A private guided walk through the old town's alleyways — the mosques, the Friday Market, the workshops where craftsmen still carve the doors that have defined this architecture for centuries. An afternoon dhow sail to the sand dunes at Shela, swimming off the boat in water so clear you can count the fish below. A private Swahili feast prepared by your cook on the rooftop under the stars — freshly caught red snapper, coconut rice, and tamarind prawns.
Departure from Lamu — the island sends you off slowly
A final morning coffee on the rooftop as the town wakes around you — the call to prayer, the sound of donkeys, the dhows moving on the channel. A private dhow takes you back to the airstrip. In your departure bag: Lamu spices, a hand-printed kanga from the Friday Market, and a note from your Karmasky concierge with recommendations for your next visit.
