About This Journey
Samburu is the safari that most travellers never find. While the crowds circle the Masai Mara, you will be in a landscape of sculpted rock, doum palms, and red earth beside a river where elephants bathe at dusk and leopards cross the sand at midnight. The Samburu Special Five — the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the improbably elegant gerenuk — exist here in extraordinary numbers and nowhere else on earth. Your luxury riverfront lodge sits directly on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, its suites open on three sides to the sounds and sights of the bush. Each game drive is private and unhurried. Each experience is designed to feel like discovery — including night drives that reveal an entirely different Africa, and a cultural exchange with Samburu warriors that leaves you with a lasting understanding of a people who have lived in balance with this landscape for centuries.
Day by Day Itinerary
Nairobi welcome — rooftop arrival over the city
Private transfer from Jomo Kenyatta to your Nairobi boutique hotel. A rooftop welcome dinner with Kenyan craft cocktails and a curated menu of local produce — your Karmasky concierge joins you to walk through Samburu's ecology, wildlife, and what to expect from the landscape you'll enter tomorrow.
Charter north — the highlands fall away
A private charter north from Wilson Airport. Watch the fertile green of the Central Highlands give way to ochre earth, thorn scrub, and the dry beauty of the Northern Frontier. Your lodge greets you on the riverbank. First game drive in the late afternoon: your guide finds a herd of reticulated giraffes — their geometric patterning distinct from anything in the south — moving through the doum palms against the fading light.
The Special Five — a private assignment
A full day with one beautifully singular objective: find all five Samburu specials. Grevy's zebras at a watering hole, their rounded ears and precise stripes unlike any other zebra on earth. A gerenuk stretching impossibly on its hind legs to reach an acacia branch. A Beisa oryx moving across the plain with the posture of something ancient. Sundowner drinks on the Uaso Nyiro bank as elephants cross upstream in the last golden light.
Samburu warriors — a genuine exchange
A morning with the Samburu community — not a curated show but a real conversation. Warriors demonstrate traditional skills. Women lead a beadwork workshop and you commission a piece made specifically for you, with your guide explaining the colour codes that carry social meaning. A shared lunch over an open fire. The afternoon at leisure: the lodge spa, a swim, or an optional camel trek into the surrounding landscape.
Dawn walk along the Uaso Nyiro
First light on the river. An armed ranger leads you on foot along the bank — tracking elephant prints in the sand, identifying birds by call (Samburu has over 365 species), watching crocodiles warm on the opposite bank with prehistoric patience. Back to camp for a lavish brunch served on your private deck above the river.
Night drive — Samburu after dark
After sunset, the bush becomes a different world entirely. Leopards cross the road with total confidence. African wildcats and civets appear in the torchlight. Genets move through the scrub. Galagos call from the trees. Your guide narrates the nocturnal ecology quietly and with the knowledge of someone who has spent their life in this particular landscape. A private stargazing session under some of Africa's clearest skies closes the evening.
Final sunrise, then south
A last dawn drive before your morning charter. Your guide has prepared a handwritten log of every species sighted during your stay, a Samburu community impact note, and a curated gift from the beadwork workshop. The charter south carries you back to Nairobi with a landscape you will not soon stop thinking about.
