About This Journey

South Africa offers something rare in travel: an entirely different world on the other side of a two-hour flight. Cape Town is one of the great cities of the world by any measure — its mountains, coastline, and restaurant scene are world-class — and the Winelands sit inside a landscape of almost implausible beauty, where wine estates have been producing for three centuries and lunches extend pleasantly into late afternoon. A short flight east takes you into a different Africa entirely: the private reserves adjacent to Kruger, where the Big Five move through unfenced wilderness and the dawn game drive is the best hour of any day. This eleven-day journey holds all three with seamless private transfers between them, boutique properties chosen for their character and intimacy, and days structured to give you the unhurried space to actually inhabit each place rather than pass through it.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day01

Cape Town arrival — the Mother City at her finest

Private transfer from Cape Town International to your boutique hotel in De Waterkant or Fresnaye — a carefully chosen address that puts you within walking distance of the city's best without the noise of the waterfront strip. A private welcome dinner at one of Cape Town's great restaurants: the menu changes with the season and the ocean is always the theme.

Day02

Table Mountain and Bo-Kaap — the city's two greatest faces

A private cable car to the summit of Table Mountain at opening time, before the day tours have assembled. The city and ocean spread below you in the morning clarity. Down to Bo-Kaap for a private Cape Malay cooking class in a resident's home — hands in the dough, the smell of cardamom and cinnamon, a lunch you have made yourself. Evening at the chef's table of a waterfront restaurant.

Day03

The Cape Peninsula — private vehicle, open roads

A private driver takes you along the full Cape Peninsula. Hout Bay Harbour for fresh linefish straight off the boat. Chapman's Peak Drive, where the road is cut into the cliff face above the Atlantic. Cape of Good Hope, the wind-scoured southwestern tip. Boulders Beach, where African penguins have colonised the granite in their thousands. Lunch at a clifftop restaurant in Simonstown overlooking the bay.

Day04

Winelands — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and private cellars

Private driver to the Winelands. Three estate tastings, including one private cellar tour not available to the public — your guide explains the geology of the Cape's wine valleys over a barrel tasting in the cool underground dark. A long, unhurried lunch at a vineyard restaurant, the Franschhoek valley spread beyond the terrace. Check in to a wine estate manor house with a working cellar beneath your feet.

Day05

Winelands at leisure — then Cape Town farewell

A slow morning on the estate. Optional yoga in the vineyard, a walk through the vines, a late estate breakfast. Drive back through the mountains for a farewell Cape Town dinner at a clifftop restaurant: sunset over the Atlantic, a menu built around local seafood, and a South African wine list that justifies the journey.

Day06

Fly to Kruger — private reserve and the Big Five

Morning flight to Hoedspruit. Private transfer to your exclusive lodge in a private reserve adjacent to Kruger — unfenced, Big Five country, no fences between you and the wilderness. An afternoon game drive begins before you have finished unpacking: elephants at the waterhole, buffalo crossing the road, the first unmistakable sound of lions at dusk.

Day07

Kruger — big cats and the hour before dawn

The 5am drive is the day's best gift. Predators are still on the move. The air is cool and the light is gold. Your private guide knows this reserve with the intimacy of someone who has driven every track at every hour. Return for a brunch of improbable quality. Afternoon drive: a leopard draped in an acacia, wild dogs if fortune allows, the buffalo herds that fill the plains like a moving landscape.

Day08

Rhino tracking on foot — a completely different scale

A guided bush walk with an armed ranger to track white rhino on foot. The experience of being at ground level in this landscape — reading the tracks, moving in silence through the long grass, standing still as a rhino feeds fifty metres away — is fundamentally different from any vehicle. Back to the lodge for a long lunch and an afternoon spa treatment.

Day09

Full Kruger immersion — dawn to boma dinner

Dawn drive, afternoon drive, boma dinner by firelight. Your guide narrates the ecology of the reserve over the meal, translating the landscape you've been moving through all day into a story that makes the next day's drive even richer. A night drive closes the evening.

Day10

Final sunrise drive — then Johannesburg

One last golden hour in the bush. A farewell sundowner at the airstrip as your bags are loaded. Private transfer to OR Tambo Airport with time for a lounge dinner before your onward connection.

Day11

Departure — carrying South Africa home

Onward from Johannesburg. Your Karmasky concierge follows up with a curated list of South African wines that can be shipped to your home address, and a personalised recommendation note for your next visit.
