About This Journey

Zambia does not perform for visitors. It simply exists — vast, patient, and extraordinary. South Luangwa is where the walking safari was born, where the bush speaks a language you learn to read on foot rather than from a vehicle window. The Luangwa River in the dry season is a ribbon of life through an otherwise parched landscape: hippos massed in the shallows, leopards hunting at dusk, and a concentration of wildlife that feels almost unreasonable in its abundance. You begin at Victoria Falls — the largest curtain of falling water on earth, felt before it is heard, in a roar and a mist that coats everything in fine spray. A luxury riverfront lodge puts you within walking distance of the falls, a private guide at your side, and the Zambezi at sunset from the bow of your own charter boat.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day01

Arrive Livingstone — the smoke that thunders

Private transfer from Livingstone Airport. Cold towels, a welcome drink, and the sound of the Falls already audible from the lodge terrace. A private Zambezi sunset cruise — your own boat, drinks and canapés, hippos surfacing around the hull as the light turns the river to copper.

Day02

Victoria Falls — early access before the world arrives

Before the park opens to the general public, your guide takes you to the Falls. The morning mist catches the light and throws a rainbow above the gorge that you can walk through. The knife-edge path belongs entirely to you. Lunch at the lodge terrace. An afternoon visit to a local Tonga village — your guide has a genuine relationship with the community, and the meeting is a conversation, not a performance.

Day03

The Zambezi — adventure by day, private dinner by night

A choice of how to spend the morning: Grade 5 white-water rafting through the gorge, or a silent canoe float through quiet oxbow channels where kingfishers land on your paddle. Afternoon spa treatments available at the lodge. In the evening, a private river dinner cruise — a chef on board, tables set on the deck, the sky going dark above the Zambezi as the hippos emerge from the shallows.

Day04

Fly to South Luangwa — into the valley

Morning flight to Mfuwe. The Luangwa Valley opens below you — a ribbon of river, green riparian woodland, and the parched plains of the valley floor. Afternoon game drive along the river: hippos packed into the shallows, Nile crocodiles on every sandbank, elephants arriving at the water's edge in the late afternoon light.

Day05

Walking safari — the bush at ground level

South Luangwa is where the walking safari was invented, and it is still done better here than almost anywhere. Your dawn walk with an armed ranger is conducted in absolute quiet — tracking elephant prints in the sand, reading the landscape for movement, standing completely still while a herd of buffalo passes fifty yards from where you stand.

Day06

Night drive — a different Africa after dark

After sunset, the Luangwa Valley rewrites itself. Leopards move across the road with total confidence, their eyes catching the torchlight. Civets and genets materialise in the scrub. Hyenas announce themselves from everywhere at once, their calls layering across the darkness. Your guide narrates it quietly and with the authority of someone who knows exactly what is happening in every direction.

Day07

Full Luangwa day — the river draws everything close

The dry season concentrates every animal in the valley around the Luangwa River. Enormous hippo pods holding their ground in the midday heat. Nile crocodiles stacked in rows on the sandbars. Huge elephant herds moving to the water in the late afternoon. Dawn drive, afternoon drive, and a moving sundowner stop at a river bend as the light fails.

Day08

Conservation immersion — meet the people protecting this place

A morning with the Zambia Carnivore Programme or South Luangwa Conservation Society — the researchers and rangers whose work keeps this valley as extraordinary as it is. Your visit directly contributes to their funding. An afternoon bush walk with your ranger focused on plant ecology and the small, brilliant life of the valley floor.

Day09

Dinner in the wilderness — under the stars

A table laid in a clearing in the bush — candles, proper linen, a four-course meal prepared by your camp chef. Your guide tells the story of the Luangwa Valley over dinner in a way that makes the whole week make more sense. A final night drive closes the evening.

Day10

Departure — Zambia stays with you

Transfer to Mfuwe Airport. Your departure bag contains a conservation impact summary, a curated selection of Zambian crafts from local artisans, and a handwritten note from your walking guide — because the relationship you've built with a landscape like this one is worth marking properly.
